Harvey Milk

“Hope will never be silent.”

A gay rights and anti-war activist, Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official in the history of California. The 1969 Stonewall Riots marked for many people the start of the gay rights revolution in the United States. From that time, American homosexuals began protesting the legal and social discrimination they faced. While Milk remained engaged in protests and rallies throughout his political career, he focused on making life better for all of his constituents, which for him meant fighting for equality for all. Today, the LGBTQ community continues the work that Milk and his contemporaries began, seeking equal and fair treatment in the eyes of society and the law.
